Can You Swim While Wearing a Lace Front Wig?
If you just put your lace front wig on and plan a swimming adventure – whether in a pool or the ocean – you need to know whether you need to take it off or not.
The simple answer is yes, you can swim while wearing a lace front wig.
However, it’s actually not that simple. There are a few crucial steps you need to take before and after swimming with your lace front wig on. Otherwise, your wig may deteriorate, look unkempt, and not last as long.
This is especially true if you’re planning to swim in a pool. Believe it or not, saltwater from the ocean is less damaging than pool water. That’s simply due to the high amounts of chemicals used to keep the pool in tip-top shape.
How to Swim While Wearing a Lace Front Wig
When it comes to swimming while wearing a lace front wig, don’t dive into the deep end without proper preparation.
You don’t want to accidentally damage your high-end lace front wig!
Here’s how to keep your wig in good shape while splashing around in the water (pool, ocean, or otherwise):
1. Make Sure Your Adhesive is Waterproof
First and foremost, double-check that the adhesive you’re using is waterproof.
Not all wig glues and tapes are designed to withstand moisture.
If you try to jump into the pool with an adhesive that’s not waterproof, your lace front wig might take a swim with you – but not on top of your head like it’s supposed to be.
That said, double-check that your adhesive is waterproof. Or, forget the stress and opt for a wig grip, elastic band, or clips. (Ensure they’re secured tightly and correctly so they don’t slip off in the water, either.)
2. Give Your Wig a Test Run
Now, even if you’re sure your glue is waterproof, you still need to ensure that your lace front wig is up for the challenge.
That said, one of the rules (well, it’s not a rule, but it should be) is to take your lace front wig for a test run.
Find a pool or other body of water you can jump into. Splash around for a bit. Don’t take it easy with your lace front wig. If all is well, you know you, your adhesive, and your lace front wig are ready for the real deal.
3. Wash and Condition Immediately
I know, I know – you likely have a schedule you follow when it comes to washing and conditioning your lace front wig, which is excellent; keep it up!
However, I have to inform you that if you’re going to go swimming with your lace front wig, your schedule is going to have to get slightly messed up.
That’s because washing and conditioning your wig ASAP after swimming is imperative, especially if you were swimming in a pool or got your hair wet in a hot tub.
You don’t want to leave the chemicals and other residues sitting on your wig for too long. This can lead to an array of issues, from knots and tangles to dryness and deterioration.
So, go ahead and give your lace front wig a nice brush-through (be gentle!), then wash and condition it as you normally would. Apply a leave-in conditioner to help restore moisture that was likely lost in the water.
4. Wear a Swimming Cap
If you’re wearing your stunning lace front wig poolside, you probably don’t want to cover it up with a swimming cap.
But if you want to be sure that the water doesn’t damage your wig, you should put one on.
A swimming cap is a quick and simple solution to avoiding damage brought on by water, whether it’s a pool, ocean, lake, river – you name it.
If nothing else, you can always find a cute swimming cap you won’t mind wearing.
5. Consider Braiding Before Swimming
You don’t necessarily have to braid your wig before you go swimming, but it’s definitely something I’d recommend.
Why?
Well, when you’re swimming around, your hair is going to be flying in every direction. This can easily lead to knots and tangles that are difficult to come out – and who wants to deal with that?
Braid your lace front wig before hopping into the water. That way, you can look flawless while ensuring your wig hairs stay in good, untangled shape. It’ll make life much more manageable after swimming – trust me!
6. Have a Special “Swim Wig”
Even with all precautions and care in place, your wig will still be somewhat affected by exposure to water – especially pool water.
That said, I don’t recommend swimming in your high-end, top-dollar wig.
My suggestion is to buy a cheap yet still fabulous lace front wig. That way, you can wear a gorgeous wig without worrying about potentially throwing a lot of money down the toilet.
Not to mention you can flaunt a new style all summer long!
7. Bonus Tip – Limit Jumping and Diving
This is more of a guideline than a steadfast rule – limit jumping and diving into the water.
The impact could loosen the adhesive or attachment device you’re using, leaving you with a wig slipping, sliding, and, ultimately, floating in the pool next to you.

Realistically, you can swim in any kind of wig. The type does not matter much. It really comes down to how you prepare for the swimming session beforehand and how you take care of the wig afterward.
Can you shower with a lace wig?
You can successfully shower with a lace wig on. However, you have to do things a bit differently. Don’t get the hairline wet, or it will weaken the bond. Start by wetting the wig, washing, and conditioning it as usual, and being more careful. Use lukewarm water, not hot.
Does lace front damage hair?
Lace front wigs don’t inherently cause damage to one’s hair. It’s more so the type of adhesive that’s being used and how the wig is applied. The other issue is wearing a wig for too long or being allergic to the wig itself.
