There is absolutely nothing worse than a lace front wig with glue caked on the front or lifting in the wind.
To keep yourself from becoming the next trending meme, you want to be sure that you prepare your wig and carefully apply the adhesive.
In this article, I’ll show you how to put on a lace front wig with glue.

1. Lace Front Wig Prep
Bleach Those Wig Knots
Hair is connected to the lace front wig by knots, which are usually black. This makes your wig noticeable, and not in a good way! For this reason, I always bleach the knots on my lace front wigs.
By bleaching your knots, the hair on your lace front will look like it is coming right from your scalp, and that’s the goal.
Follow these steps if you decide to bleach the knots on your wig:
- To keep the bleach from seeping through and ruining your wig, try mixing 30-volume developer and BW bleaching powder. (I like the texture of a thick paste.)
- Turn your wig inside out to keep the hair safe from damage.
- Put the paste on the knots using a brush.
- Leave the mixture on the wig for about 20 minutes or so, then rinse it thoroughly.
- I finish by washing the paste off with purple shampoo. This will give your knots a cooler tone and leave you with a lovely, golden blonde.
Wash Your Wig
For safety reasons and to give your look that extra fresh pizzazz, you should wash your lace front wig before you wear it. I like to think that we never know the exact origin of our pieces, which is why I opt for washing a new unit every time.
Of course, only wash your unit if it is made of human hair. Washing a synthetic piece might leave you looking a tad bit electrocuted. Here are a few products that well for me when I wash my wigs:
- Baby shampoo
- Dish liquid
- Mild products only
Match the Lace to Your Skin Tone
The next step? Make your new “scalp” look real by making sure that the lace on your wig is the same color as your skin. Personally, my skin is of a darker hue, so I never skip this step!
You have two options for making this happen:
- Makeup: I usually use a mix of concealer, foundation powder, and hairspray to blend my lace right on in.
- You can also use a lace tint spray, which won’t leave a mess behind. I like the EBIN NEW YORK brand for the variety of shades available.
Pluck the Wig’s Edges
The hairline is often overlooked and the biggest giveaway. If your wig isn’t pre-plucked, I always put in the effort and pluck the edges for a convincing hairline.
Here are a few tips that help me through the process:
- Try taking a picture of your hairline so that you have a general idea of the shape of your head as you work.
- Make sure you pluck the hair gradually and in layers. Staying in one spot will give you an uneven look.
- Leave the middle area alone. Simply focus on the edges.
2. Before Putting Your Lace Front Wig On
Now that you have your wig prepped and ready, the time has arrived to install your unit. (Not so fast!) The last step before you put on your new glamorous look is to make sure that you have the correct wig cap.
Choose The Right Wig Cap
You don’t want to make the mistake of putting in all that extra effort to make your lace front look real, only to fail because of the wrong wig cap.
Pick a wig cap that matches your skin tone. If you need help getting close to your shade, you can use your makeup or lace tint from earlier if need be. Remember these helpful tips:
- You can braid your hair, twist it, or choose to put it in a ponytail underneath the cap.
- Put all of your hair inside the cap. (No stray aways allowed!)
- Make sure that your hair doesn’t give a bulky look underneath. Because I have long dreadlocks, I tend to stick with full, voluminous styles. Straight hair would be a dead giveaway for me personally.
- You can use a vinyl wig cap or a latex cap as well.
3. How to Apply Glue to Your Lace Front Wig
Now, for the moment of truth – the glue down. For the best results, make sure that you pick a glue that won’t irritate your skin.
You also want a sturdy, snatch-proof hold so that your wig won’t slide and glide while you try to put it on. Here’s how to apply glue to your lace front:
- Apply the glue to the hairline with a dotting motion or a thin line.
- Smooth the application. (I recommend using a makeup sponge.)
- Use a blow dryer until the glue turns clear. It does not have to be dry.
- Repeat and apply another layer for an extra sturdy fit.
Recommended Lace Front Wig Glue
Getting the wrong glue could mean sweating your wig off, which would not help you convince others that your hair is real! Here are a few lace front wig glue recommended by professionals:
- Bold Hold Extreme Cream Adhesive (my personal go-to)
- Walker Tape Extra Hold
- Got2b Glued Blasting Freeze Spray (another personal favorite)
- The Hair Closet Lace Glue
4. After Putting Your Lace Front Wig On
Finally, you’ve got your wig ‘glued up’ and ready to go! Finish these final steps for a new hairdo that will turn heads:
- Cut your lace by starting with the corners that are near your ears, then cut the rest into sections.
- Glue the lace down.
- Trim the excess away.
- Now, this step is very important! I always “melt” the hairline of my lace front wigs so it completely disappears. Use a little more of your wig glue and press the back of your comb against it. Voila – no more hairline!
Final Words
Putting your lace front wig on with glue can be a quick and painless process. Be sure that you prepare your wig first with the proper steps, such as plucking your hairline and making your lace match your skin tone.
Choose a sturdy glue, be sure to apply enough layers, and make sure that your hairline is melted and flawless. Now, get a brand new lace front and prepare to be unstoppable!
